A quality yarding and strong buyer competition delivered a pleasing result at the Elders Murgon Pre-Weighed Weaner Sale. Held on Friday 17 April 2026, 1,012 head were offered across a wide draw area.
Cattle were presented from Gympie, Cootharaba, Cooran, Kandanga, Woolooga, Manumbar, Nanango, Yarraman, Kilkivan, Goomeri, Mundubbera, Theodore and surrounding districts, showcasing the depth and consistency of South East Queensland production.
Elders Murgon Stock Agent Mitch Jackson said the sale exceeded expectations, particularly given recent market fluctuations.
“The sale started very strongly and we had a good feel for it straight away,” Mitch said.
“The better runs of weaners sold exceptionally well, with a large portion making up to 540c/kg for calves weighing around 280–310kg.
“We knew the quality would attract strong competition, but the result was better than anticipated given the slight softening in the broader market.”
Weaner steers sold to a firm to dearer trend, while heifers remained firm to slightly easier, reflecting current market conditions. Buyer attendance was a standout, with strong local support complemented by additional competition from further afield.
“There was excellent buyer participation right throughout the day. The lanes were full, and competition was consistent across most categories,” Mitch said.
The sale achieved a gross of approximately $1.17 million, marking a significant increase on the previous year’s result and reinforcing the event’s growing reputation.
“We went into the sale aiming to build on last year, and we’re very pleased with the outcome. It certainly sets a new benchmark for future sales,” he said.
Elders Southern Queensland Livestock Manager Gavin Robinson praised the collective effort behind the result.
“This was a great outcome for the Murgon team and our broader South East Queensland livestock group,” Gavin said.
“We had strong support on the ground, with plenty of Elders staff assisting on the day, which contributed to a well-run and successful sale.”
Among the highlights in the steer section, AJ & BM Kirkegard, Barambah, presented an outstanding run of Santa Gertrudis and Charolais cross steers, topping the sale at 540c/kg. LJ & SV Finney, Manumbar, also achieved strong results with Santa steers reaching 538c/kg, while DA & AL Stanton, Goomeri, sold Santa cross steers to 516c/kg.

Charolais-influenced cattle continued to perform well, with Samuel Holdings Pty Ltd, Manumbar Station, and C V Paterson both recording solid returns across their consignments. Simmental steers from S J Robinson, Upper Yarraman, were also well received, alongside consistent Angus cross lines offered by Noosa Natural Farms, MN & BM McDonald and Brettayla Pty Ltd.
Brahman and Brahman cross steers generally sold within expected ranges, maintaining steady demand.
In the heifer portion, Hills Grazing Trust produced a quality line of Simmental cross heifers. Angus and Brangus heifers from Noosa Natural Farms attracted steady competition, supported by additional quality lines from BK & TA Munt and others.
A Champion Pen competition was again a feature of the sale, recognising the quality and presentation of cattle across multiple breed categories, with strong participation from vendors across the district.
Mitch also acknowledged the importance of sponsor support in the ongoing success of the sale.
“This is such a rewarding sale to be part of, largely thanks to the backing we receive from our sponsors,” he said.
“With around $30,000 in prizes, it’s a significant contribution to the district and adds real value for our vendors.”
The Elders Murgon team extended their thanks to all vendors, buyers and sponsors who contributed to the success of the sale.
With strong results, quality cattle and continued industry support, the Murgon Pre-Weighed Weaner Sale continues to strengthen its position as a key fixture on the regional selling calendar.
