A strong community spirit was on full display in Deniliquin last Friday evening as Elders hosted its Australian Rules Football ‘State of Origin’ Charity Match. It was an event that combined the energy of grassroots football with a powerful fundraising effort for a vital local cause.
Bringing together Elders employees from across Victoria and New South Wales, the match raised over $32,000 for Can Assist Deniliquin, a volunteer-led charity supporting cancer patients in the region.
The match saw Team Victoria claim victory on the field, while Team New South Wales narrowly led the fundraising tally online. Players and supporters alike embraced the evening, with many travelling from across the country to participate.
Bianca, a local representative from Can Assist Deniliquin, addressed the crowd during the charity auction and dinner that followed the match.
“I just want to say a big thank you, Elders. This is absolutely amazing,” she said.
“We are just so grateful to be the recipients of tonight’s auction and all the donations that have been made.”
She also highlighted the essential role Can Assist Deniliquin plays for country families facing cancer.
“Living in the country throws in more challenges than what people in the city face. There is a lot of travel, and a lot of associated costs. Last financial year we gave out $107,000 to our local community. Every cent raised tonight stays here in Deniliquin to help local Deni families. That’s what makes this event so powerful.”
The event featured special guest and former North Melbourne premiership player Anthony Stevens, who also spent three years working with Elders.
Brendan Rinaldi, Elders State General Manager Victoria/Riverina, spoke of the event as a standout example of Elders’ values in action.
“This match showcased the best of our people - their generosity, their commitment to local communities, and their ability to create something special when they come together,” Brendan said.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our Victorian and NSW teams and all the staff involved in bringing this event to life.”
John Fitzpatrick, Branch Manager at Elders Deniliquin and one of the event organisers, reflected on the town’s role in hosting the match.
“Deniliquin knows how to show up for a cause and tonight proved that. To see our branch, the local Rams club, and Elders staff from across the country unite for something bigger than the game, that’s what community looks like. It was an honour to host this event here in our town.”
With over $32,000 raised, the 2025 Charity Australian Rules State of Origin has set a high bar but also laid the foundations for what many hope will become an annual tradition. Plans are already being discussed for a rematch in 2026, with teams eager to tip the fundraising and scoreboard balance in their favour.
