Online clearing sale sells goods from SA’s far west to the deep south

The Elders team in South Australia has trialled a new way of selling plant and machinery, through a statewide, online clearing sale.

Running over four days in March, and exclusively online at AuctionsPlus, the sale offered over 400 lots with more than 2900 registered participants viewing the auction.

State Livestock Manager for southern SA Laryn Gogel said the catalogue included something for everyone.

“The sale saw a very healthy result. Although not all lots were sold at auction, the catalogue received in excess of 28,000 views leading up to the auction, while just under 1500 users competed through the auction period,” he said.

“There were items of all sizes and values completing the catalogue, from large machinery items to smaller plant, fencing material, livestock handling equipment, vehicles and general farming goods, all of which was well received by the viewing gallery.

It was the larger machinery items which ended up taking pride of place in the eyes of buyers, with a top price achieved of $206,000 for a Horwood Bagshaw scaribar, and the second part of the combination, a Horwood Bagshaw air cart, realising $196,000.

Laryn explained that this was the first of what the team hopes will become quarterly sales.

“We have trialled new style of offering farm goods, plant and machinery, in what we hope will be a quarterly statewide sale,” he said.

“This first sale, which launches the format, saw 20 Elders branches from across South Australia list 418 lots, all the way from Wudinna in the far west, to Mount Gambier in the deep south.

“We are looking forward to holding the next auction in the series in June, once again in conjunction with AuctionsPlus.”

Elders General Manager for SA Bernard Seal said though clearing sales are nothing new to Elders, he was excited to see the team successfully use a new method.

“Elders has been conducting clearing sales for over 100 years, but this is the first time we have conducted a statewide online sale,” he said.

“We hope conducting sales in this way takes angst, stress and worry away from our clients who might otherwise need to sell these items privately, and also enables them to list the goods in front of a far greater audience.

“Using the power of our extensive branch and staff network right across the state, from the far west to the deep south, this was all about creating dollars for our clients and helping them out, so it was a great success.

“We are looking forward to these becoming a regular and ongoing sales.”
