Adelaide Ram Sale posts firm result

The Adelaide Stud Merino and Poll Merino Ram Sale took place on Friday, with a good result for studs across southern Australia.

Widely regarded as one of Australia’s top multi-vendor Merino sales, the esteemed Adelaide Ram Sale was held on Friday as part of the 2023 Royal Adelaide Show.

Australian Wool Innovation Chair Jock Laurie introduced the afternoon with discussion of sustainability in the livestock and wool industries, before the Elders auctioneers got started on the sale’s opening lot.

After some lulls in bidding, a ram from mid north based stud North Ashrose took out the top spot, hitting the $28,000 high. The ram was sold to Argentinian stud, Tecka Merinos.

This year, 37 of 49 rams from South Australian and Victorian studs were sold, averaging a very solid $11,460 – just $200 down on last year.

Vendors and purchasers alike were pleased with the sale, which drew a strong crowd of stud and commercial producers from across Australia.

Elders Stud Stock Marketing Manager Tom Penna said it was a generally a good sale, but with some mixed results across the day.

“As we often see with multi-vendor sales, we saw some really good prices, and some not so good,” he said.

“In the Elders catalogue, and rams we are involved in, we were very happy. Quite a number of studs selling rams over $20,000, including North Ashrose who had a very good sale, taking out the top price of $28,000, and two of their other rams selling for $23,000 and $22,000.

“All in all, there was a little bit of reservation in the crowd this year, but it turned out well.”

Elders State General Manager SA Bernard Seal, who attended the sale, said the Adelaide Ram Sale is one of the top stud sales in Australia.

“There is a lot of tradition and a lot of history at this sale over the years, with all of the leading studs from the southern region here,” he said.

“This is always an exciting sale – we get to see the best genetics on show, with studs continually reinvesting to increase productivity and end results for our commercial producers.”
