Preparations for Gatton field day underway

The Elders Gatton team have been busy transplanting various vegetable crops in preparation for their upcoming field day, set to be held in the first week of July.

The event will host local growers and Elders agronomists from New South Wales and Queensland, as research and development companies trial their new products and programs.

The importance of running horticultural field days extends beyond testing and demonstrating new chemistry, as they have an important educational role.

Greg Teske is an agronomist based in our Gatton branch and has been working alongside the rest of the Gatton team to prepare for the field day.

Greg said a variety of vegetable crops have been planted to enable a broad range of pests and diseases to be tested.

”Eight winter vegetable crops are in the process of being planted including cabbage, cauliflower, celery, shallots, bulb onions, lettuce, broccoli and Chinese cabbage,” he said.

“The inclusion of control sites will showcase the difference between new chemistry and the danger a ‘hands off’ approach poses to crops.”

The trial sites will have both an agronomy and digital ag tech focus, with attending suppliers keen to showcase their crop protection products, practices and application tools.

“We are hoping to learn and demonstrate best practices in the use of products as well as application,” Greg said. “A brilliant inclusion this year for our growers is FMC’s new Boom Spray Technology, showcasing the importance of selecting the right nozzle for appropriate water pressure, volume, and droplet size, in an effort to combat spray drift.”

Greg explained that this is the second year the event is running, following the positive reception it received the first-time round.

“Companies that weren’t involved last year are excited to be a part of the trial for 2023, with the opportunity to connect with key growers in the area ahead of their new products being released in the horticulture sector.”

The Elders Gatton Field Day will be held the first week of July, located at 371 Tenthill Creek Road, Lower Tenthill.
