Investing in the next generation at SA Sheep Expo

Elders was proud to support the future of the sheep and wool industry at this year’s SA Sheep Expo. Held at the Adelaide Showgrounds, hundreds of young people gathered to explore career pathways and hands-on learning opportunities.

As a long-term supporter of the event, Elders was on site delivering practical insights, real-world experience and a standout global opportunity for one senior student.

As part of the Careers Expo element of the event, Elders staff met with students from a wide range of backgrounds. They offered a practical look at life in the livestock, wool and animal health sectors. Sessions were led by District Wool Manager and Jamestown Branch Manager Tim Shepherd. He focused on topics students could directly relate to, including selecting rams and understanding what drives productivity and profitability on farm.

Tim said the sessions were a chance to connect with young people and help them see what a career in agriculture could look like.

“It’s been a great opportunity to work with the students, talk through key topics and start building relationships,” Tim said.

“Whether they’re already involved in agriculture or just curious, it helps grow awareness and interest.”

Alongside technical learning, staff shared insights into the breadth of careers available across the business. This helped students understand how their interests could translate into long-term roles within the industry.

One of the highlights of the week was the presentation of the Elders Scholarship, awarding one senior student the opportunity to join the 2026 Elders Wool Tour to China. The 15-day tour traces Australian wool from farm gate to finished product, giving participants first-hand exposure to global supply chains and markets.

Elders SA Southern Livestock Manager Laryn Gogel said the scholarship reflects Elders’ commitment to investing in young people and providing experiences beyond the paddock.

“It’s a significant prize and a fantastic opportunity to see how Australian wool is processed, marketed and valued on a global scale,” Laryn said.

This year’s scholarship was awarded to 19-year-old Jacob Scales, who has participated in the Sheep Expo for the past few years. Jacob described the moment as surreal and said the experience would play an important role in shaping his next steps.

“It’s a great opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads. It will help me see where I want to go in the industry and what I want to do,” he said.

Elders’ continued involvement in Sheep Expo SA reflects a strong commitment to supporting the future of Australian agriculture, through education, career pathways and opportunities that extend well beyond a classroom.
