Elders has proudly taken out the top honours at both the Victorian and South Australian ALPA Young Auctioneer competitions today.

Livestock agents James Gadd from Ballarat, Victoria and Nathan McCarthy from Lucindale, South Australia claimed victory in their respective states.
The competitions, held today in Mortlake, showcased the next generation of auctioneering talent, with four participants taking part in the state finals.
Elders State Livestock Manager Vic/Riv Nick Gray said Elders’ strong presence at the competition highlights the company’s commitment to excellence in the livestock industry.
“Both James and Nathan really controlled their sales from start to finish,” Nick said.
“Their experience really shone through, and they displayed the professionalism and presence of true auctioneers. They were the clear standouts on the day.”
For James, the win was both a relief and a proud achievement.
“It feels fantastic, I’m proud and very relieved,” James said.
“The standard of competition was incredibly high, and every competitor performed well, so to come out on top is very rewarding.
“I feel very grateful to have had feedback and guidance from leaders like Nick along the way. He has really helped me develop and refine my skills, and it’s a privilege to learn from someone of his calibre.
Nathan echoed James’ sentiment, and after having finished as runner up twice before, his victory has been hard-earned.
“Coming back this year and winning the title is very rewarding,” Nathan said.
“I’ve had the chance to do a lot of selling at Naracoorte in recent months, and I’ve been fortunate to receive great feedback from colleagues along the way. The ALPA school was also a big help; it gave me the chance to focus on diction, voice care, and the finer points of presentation.”
James and Nathan can now look forward to representing Elders on the national stage at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April.
“It will be a real honour to represent Elders Ballarat on a national stage,” James said.
“I’ve never been to the Sydney Show, so I’m excited to experience it for the first time, and I think it’s a great opportunity to showcase what we do in Ballarat.”
Elders was well-represented across both state competitions, with multiple participants demonstrating our depth of young talent. Nick emphasised the strength of the whole team.
“Every one of our competitors represented themselves and Elders with professionalism and skill,” he said.
“They should all be extremely proud of their performances, as I certainly am.”
With both Victorian and South Australian state titles now in Elders’ hands, the focus shifts to the 2026 ALPA National Young Auctioneer Competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
