Meg Brown is a trusted advisor to her broadacre cropping clients as an Elders agronomist working in the Riverina region.
Growing up in western Sydney, Meg Brown’s younger self might be surprised that she now spends her days in Riverina paddocks, completing crop inspections, conducting soil tests and discussing crop planning and selection with her clients.
It was her summer holidays in the country as a child which led her to consider a career in agriculture, and now, after living and working in Griffith for almost four years, Meg is not looking back.
“It was those summer holidays which helped me realise that being a part of a community, and making a difference from the grassroots, was important to me,” Meg said.
“From there, I knew I wanted a career in agriculture. I graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science Agriculture, and I have not looked back.”
Meg explained that the beauty of being an agronomist is that no two days are the same. Specialising in cotton, rice, maize, barley, canola, and wheat, her role certainly keeps her busy.
“In the Riverina, we grow a wide variety of crops, which means I am able to support growers in a range of ways,” she said.
“On any given day, I might be completing crop inspections to evaluate and help growers with their management of irrigation, pests and disease. Pre-crop I also conduct soil tests to analyse soil health and nutrient levels to assist in the discussions of crop planning and variety selection. Another key part of my role is sitting down with growers, and going over a draft plan for the season ahead and helping them create a budget.”
Of great importance to Meg is ensuring her clients feel supported throughout the whole season.
“I am always listening to what my growers need and collaborating with growers and other agronomists to get the best result,”
“This includes being open to discussion, providing insight from the latest research, products and practices in the industry and working together to provide realistic solutions.
“Maintaining strong relationships is important in my role and that is why it is important to know your growers and provide clear, concise communication.”
Meg is supported by a strong network of Elders agronomists across Australia, who are only too willing to jump in and support if needed.
“Working with Elders has provided me with an extensive network of specialists who are always willing to answer the phone and give you a hand,” she said.
“During my time with Elders I have been fortunate to have many great mentors who have been instrumental in my development, and I am incredibly grateful for their time and expertise.”
