Community tradition continues with the 20th annual Jerilderie Working Dog Auction

The tightknit community of Jerilderie is working through final preparations as excitement builds for the anticipated 20th annual Jerilderie Working Dog Auction, set to be held this Saturday, 24 February.

Since its inception, the Jerilderie Working Dog Auction has grown from a modest gathering of seventeen dogs to a premier event featuring upwards of 50 working dogs each year.

Event coordinator Warwick Doolan, a volunteer since the event began, is eagerly awaiting the milestone event, reflecting on its remarkable journey over the past two decades.

"It's incredible to see how far we've come, this year we’ll have 67 dogs to be auctioned, from 67 different vendors,” Warwick said.

Central to the auction's success is the unwavering support of volunteers, Elders staff, and participants who generously contribute their time and resources.

Warwick emphasised the event's fully voluntary nature, with Elders staff dedicating their own time to ensure its smooth operation.

"We are immensely grateful for the ongoing support we receive each year from Elders staff, not only from Jerilderie and Finley, but across Victoria and NSW," he said.

“Each Elders staff member volunteers their time to help out, they aren’t paid to work the sale, they just want to be there and be a part of it.”

Nick Gray, Elders livestock area manager and sale auctioneer, has attended the event and auctioned the sale the last six years.

"The sale primarily features 95 per cent kelpies and a few border collies, however it’s inclusive of all working dogs," Nick explained.

Over the years, the auction has attracted buyers and sellers from across Australia, showcasing the widespread appeal.

”A highlight was back in 2019 was when we broke the national record, selling a dog for over $25,000,” Nick said.

The sale continues to rise in both popularity and value, currently holding the Australian record for the highest average across a working dog sale, at $10,580.

“The sale tends to reflect the livestock market value in the area, so it will be interesting to see how this year’s sale measures up, with sheep and cattle prices bouncing,” he said.

All proceeds of the sale benefit the Jerilderie Apex Club, with the funds raised from the auctions in past years enabling the club to undertake numerous projects benefiting the community. From upgrading an aged care hostel near the hospital, to renovating essential facilities such as nurses' cottages, the club's contributions have left a lasting impact on the town.

Past auction proceeds have also supported local youth initiatives, including funding for school camps, sporting trips, and assistance for families in need.

As the anticipation builds for this year's auction, the community reflects on the significance of the event with the auction remaining a cherished tradition, symbolising unity and collective effort within the Jerilderie community.
