Emily Greer has a wealth of experience in animal health and livestock management, and thanks to Elders, is taking the next step in her career, working towards becoming a Livestock Production Advisor.
Emily’s journey in agriculture began in Dubbo, where she spent her school years. Her interest in the industry was sparked by the time on her family’s property, about 40 minutes outside of Dubbo.
“It was those weekends and school holidays on the farm that really drew me to agriculture,” Emily said.
“Watching a heifer have her first calf was a game changer for me, I fell in love with cows and the livestock world.”
A significant influence during this time was Marty Simmons, her family’s livestock agent, and now the branch manager of Dubbo.
“Marty taught me how to put cattle through the yards, and that really sparked my interest in the industry.”
At 18, Emily packed her bags and headed to Western Australia to work at Balfour Downs Station, in the Pilbara. While her time there was invaluable, her diverse skill set comes from a mix of experience beyond the station.
“I’ve been all over Australia and done everything from working as a shearer’s cook to breaking horses” she said.
“I’ve also earned my certification as an artificial insemination technician and dipped my toes into horticulture, learning a lot about growing fruit, vegetables, and turf.”
However, it was Emily’s passion for livestock that eventually led her to Elders.
“My heart was always set on livestock, so when a job opportunity came up in Wagga, I jumped at it. Now, I’m proud to wear the pink shirt and be a part of the team.”
Currently, Emily is focused on becoming a Livestock Production Advisor, who works to improve the condition and profitability of livestock.
“I’ve been tackling online modules for livestock production, but the real highlight has been meeting like-minded people from different areas. Sharing knowledge and discussing topics like disease management has been incredibly valuable.”
Mentorship has also played a key role in Emily’s journey.
“Rob Inglis has been my biggest mentor. He’s a walking encyclopedia, and I soak up as much knowledge as I can from him.”
Rob, who is a Senior Livestock Production Advisor based at Wagga, also encouraged Emily to take on a new position in Narrandera, where she recently moved. Her goal is to help educate livestock producers and gain even more experience in the field.
Reflecting on her time at Elders, Emily emphasised the strong sense of community.
"It’s the community at Elders that I love. I know I can reach out to anyone for help, and the support is always there. I also really enjoy working with our clients and adding value to their businesses, it’s truly rewarding."
As Emily gears up for her next chapter in Narrandera, her passion for the agriculture industry is as strong as ever.
"I live by the quote ‘dream big but dream out loud,’ and Elders has given me so many opportunities to work towards my dream of becoming a Livestock Production Advisor."
